Our story

Rich in history, bound by tradition

The Nel family have been custodians of this corner of the world for well over two hundred years. We are of the land and for the land.

A nube ad montem, a monte ad florem, a flore ad vitam.

From cloud to mountain, from mountain to flower, from flower to life. Alex's words for the farm.

Over two hundred years on the land

The Nel family has called Cloudskraal home for over 200 years. We are of the land and for the land: custodians of this corner of the Bokkeveld Plateau since the farm was first settled around 1770, continuing a legacy of rooibos and sheep farming while pioneering wine cultivation on the high plateau.

Where the biomes meet

Cloudskraal lies beside the small town of Nieuwoudtville, where the Cape fynbos, the Hantam Karoo, Boesmanland and the Knersvlakte intersect. From the edge of the krans, nearly a kilometre above the Namaqualand plains, the view stretches eighty kilometres across the Knersvlakte. Ancient dolerite meets Tankwa shale and soft sandstone underfoot, sculpted over millions of years.

The old stone church

An old stone church stands on the farm, its gable and arched doorway still intact. Alex's notes place it among the earliest church buildings of the district; we are gathering the records before we tell that story in full, and will add it here with its sources.

The bulb capital of the world

Nieuwoudtville is celebrated for its diversity of bulbs and other wildflowers. After winter rain, spring brings patches of pink, yellow and red across the plateau; the flowers and their timing vary with the season. The regional bird guide includes sunbirds and secretarybirds: look out for them while exploring, and record the date and place of any sighting.

The people of Cloudskraal

A farm is its people. The families who live and work at Cloudskraal carry its stories, its harvests and its hospitality. The farm-life pages name people only where they have been identified in the photograph, and this site will keep making room for them.

The family

Three of the people behind the farm

  • Japie Nel

    Owner and managing director

Japie has deep roots in the land he has nurtured his entire life. His vision and dedication have made Cloudskraal a thriving enterprise that honours both tradition and innovation, farming in harmony with its surroundings and building a legacy of stewardship and community.

  • Alex Nel

Owner and marketing director; wine and trade enquiries

The eldest son, with a background in engineering and entrepreneurship, Alex oversees the marketing and sales of the farm's wine and handles trade enquiries for wine, rooibos and grapes. Grounded in the family's legacy and driven by ambitious dreams, with his feet on the ground and his eyes on the moon.

  • Frances Nel

    Director of guest experience

Frances brings a background in biology, botany and biotechnology, with a specialisation in wine production, to years of hands-on experience running the Cloudskraal accommodation. Her warmth and attention to detail are a cornerstone of a stay at Cloudskraal.
