Preparing the next planting

10 and 11 July 2026. Jan Martin prepared the soil for the next rooibos planting with the land in flower, and on the escarpment edge the small plants were out between the quartz stones.

The next planting

On 10 and 11 July, Jan Martin was preparing the soil for the next rooibos planting. In the photograph he stands beside the green tractor, with yellow flowers spread across the land behind him. The flowers and the work belong to the same view: this is cultivated ground, held within the wider landscape of the plateau.

At the edge of the escarpment

A second photograph brings the view right down to the ground. Small plants grow between pale quartz stones on the escarpment edge. After the scale of the tractor and the open land, these few centimetres of soil offer another way of looking at the farm. The plants are left unnamed here; their forms and setting are enough to invite a closer look.

Two views of the same days

Together, the pictures move between preparation for a crop and the smaller life already growing nearby. One is about the work ahead; the other asks us to pause over what is there. Both are part of these July days at Cloudskraal.
