Among the rows
On the evening of 16 February, the rooibos bushes had grown in and were ready to be cut. A narrow track leads between tall green rows, drawing the eye through the crop towards a pale sky. From inside the field, the plants are close and substantial; the photograph gives a sense of the crop before it leaves the land for the tea court.
The light beyond the fields
The same evening appears again in the wider landscape photographs. The sky builds behind the windmill, while light from the west reaches across the fields. Moving out from between the rooibos rows changes the scale of the scene: the crop becomes part of a much larger pattern of land and sky.
Before the cut
These pictures stay with the moment before harvesting. They show the standing bushes and the evening around them, rather than the later cutting or processing. Those stages have their own story on the tea court. Here, it is the green crop and the last light that hold our attention.
