A walk through the vineyard
At the end of July, Japie walked the dormant vines. Without their leaves, the canes and rows give the vineyard a different shape from the one seen in flower season. The photograph keeps the person within that pattern of cultivated land, rather than separating the work of the farm from its landscape.
The family together
On 29 July, Enya, Japie, Frances, Angelique and Alex stood together among the winter trees and yellow flowers. It is a family picture with the farm still around it: bare branches behind, flowers below and the people who belong to the place at its centre.
Garsland after dark
Two nights later, Garsland was photographed lit beneath a clear sky. After the daylight scenes in the vineyard and among the trees, the house offers a quieter closing view. The sequence moves through a few winter days, from walking the rows to gathering together and finally looking back towards the house at night.
