Pink across the plateau

On the evening of 29 March, pink Maartblomme were in flower across the plateau. The wide photograph brings the flower heads into the foreground, with red earth beneath them and the plain stretching towards the horizon. Above it all, the sky carries the softer pink and blue of evening.

From a landscape to a flower

The closer photographs change the scale. Instead of looking across the display, we can follow the individual flower heads and the spaces between them. Moving between the wide view and these details lets the same flowering scene be read in different ways, as both a landscape and a gathering of small forms.

A March evening

Maartblomme is the local name used in the farm notes. This article stays with that name and the photographed display, rather than assigning an unconfirmed species. The date belongs to these pictures: a particular evening when flowers, earth and the last colour in the sky met on the plateau.
